Dear Parents and College Community,
As you may be aware, Mr David Gonski has been heading up a federal government review into the funding of schools. The review is expected to come to government in December. Many of the those who are stakeholders in government education, including both primary and secondary teacher unions and Principal professional bodies, state and national, as well as the Australian Council of State School Organisations, are seeking support from all parents, teachers and students of government schools to send a message to Mr Gonski about the benefits of greater investment in public schools. That message can be sent via the website www.forourfuture.org.au.
Wheelers Hill joins the Scouts to be one of the first schools in Victoria to pioneer a new, collaborative fundraiser to provide extra resources for its educational programs.
Preparation and planning for the next student trip to the United States in January, 2013 is well underway. Highlights include a visit to Disneyland, Universal Studios and Knottsberry Farm in Los Angeles; walking across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as well as travelling on the iconic cable cars.
We were recently privileged to have visitors with a connection to Wheelers Hill who had chosen a different to usual career path. James Cosham, brother of Rebecca in Year 11 literally "dropped in" with friends from the Navy. Hovering over our school oval precisely on schedule at 9.00am, James, a helicopter pilot with the Navy, co-pilot (also James) and Navigation & Weapons Specialist Tim, emerged from a sleek black helicopter to talk with our Year 10 students about pathways. With Year 10 students about to go on work experience it proved a real eye opener about what is possible in each student’s future and set minds ticking about their passion.
The last month has been an extremely busy one for Middle School students with so many activities. Year 7 & 8 students competed in the Monash Group interschool competitions in netball, football and soccer with great enthusiasm and teamwork. Special thanks to students who acted as assistants, referees and scorers.
Congratulations to the Year 9 Performance Art class led by drama teacher Mrs Robinson who took their original show “Snow White Escapes” on the road to Waverley Meadows Primary School following a show in our theatrette for Brandon Park and Mulgrave Primary. This subject is part of the Yr 9 elective program and students excelled in their performance and staging skills.
Wanna be a rock star? Wheelers is the place to go!
We were delighted to have back to the school The Living End founders Chris Cheney and Scott Owen. As part of a journey back to places that were seminal in their development, the band returned to Wheelers Hill SC, where they first began playing together and developing their sound.
