LANGUAGES: CHINESE (MANDARIN) AND FRENCH
Studying a second language has a number of benefits, exposing students to new cultures and customs as well as improving student writing and grammar in both their first language and chosen language of study.
The study of a second language is compulsory at Wheelers Hill Secondary College in both Years 7 and 8. Students may choose either Chinese (Mandarin), introduced in 2020, or French - two of the most commonly-spoken languages in the world. Throughout their study, students will learn enough language for them to hold a simple conversation and will develop the foundations for literacy in their selected language. They will also learn about the cultures of countries where their language is spoken.
In Year 9 and 10 the study of language is optional, however we strongly encourage students to continue their study as research demonstrates literacy in another language will enhance literacy in their own language. The study of a second language also opens up a wealth of opportunities for future study and employment.
