Music is a core subject at the school in Year 7 and 8, then offered as an elective in Year 9 and 10 with pathways into VCE. Students are exposed to the theory and practical side of this challenging subject, where they are encouraged to work collaboratively, practice technique and enhance their musicality skills.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
Instrumental Music is available for all students in the Wheelers Hill Secondary College Community. We currently offer private and group lessons in instruments such as guitar, piano, percussion, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, trombone and vocals. The school has a variety of bands and ensembles that students can partake in, with both vocal groups and instrumental groups offered. Our music ensembles perform at various events, at various showcase and performance nights open to parents and the public throughout the year.
Dance is offered as an elective at the school in Year 9 and 10, with pathways into VCE. Students will work on a range of styles, both in ensemble and solo development. Students will be given the opportunity to see and participate in professional workshops, attend live dance shows and present work to the wider community.
DRAMA and THEATRE STUDIES
We offer a number of performance based subjects within all year levels, with the most popular being Drama and Theatre Studies. In Year 7 and 8, Drama is a compulsory part of the curriculum, with a focus on boosting confidence and creativity at the commencement of the student’s secondary schooling. Drama is offered in Year 9 and 10 as an elective, with pathways into VCE. Students will be exposed to a range of different theatre styles and texts, which are highly supportive of the English and Literature curriculum.
PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE AND CREATIVE ARTS FESTIVAL
Twice a year students who are involved in the many Performing Arts programs at the College are given an opportunity to showcase their talents to the wider community. Promoting confidence, creativity and celebrating the hard work throughout the year, the Showcases are a wonderful event, open to the public.
Each year we celebrate student achievement with an Art Show that displays the wide range of student artwork created throughout the year. The exhibition also showcases the talents of our Technology and Design students. Our official Opening Night also provides an opportunity for the Performing Arts and Food Technology students to be involved. The exhibition is supported by the Monash Gallery and welcomes visitors to the school over several days.
Wheelers Hill Secondary College has a proud history of presenting quality musical productions to the wider community. Students from Year 7 – 10 have the opportunity to audition, rehearse and present a musical production every year – providing all students the chance to extend on their confidence, organisational skills, creative problem solving and interpersonal development. This spectacular whole school event takes place offsite at state-of-the-art theatrical venues, providing students the opportunity to work with theatre industry professionals.
The Production goes beyond the acting and presentation of a musical, as the Program provides multiple opportunities for all students with different interests and skillsets.
We offer a wonderful Production Design Internship Program, where students interested in the production roles of costume, make up and prop work alongside Artists in residence in the planning, development and creation of key pieces in the show.
Students are also offered the chance to work on the technical side of theatre, fulfilling roles in crew, lighting, sound and set design.
